Our Reading Scheme
At Yealmpstone Farm Primary School we currently use Letters and Sounds supplemented by our own school programme of study to teach early reading. We have carefully linked phonetically decodable books for our early readers so that they can access every word that they read. Children are introduced to sounds and then will take books home to reinforce those sounds they already know. This means that they develop confidence and accuracy.
Once children can read all the sounds, they are introduced to a wider range of books which follow the UK book band guide starting from turquoise. Our school also has Accelerated Reader which codes reading books from their reading age. Children are able to take a quiz once they have read their book which assesses their reading comprehension. They can achieve star badges and certificates as they read more books. Reading is very popular and children thrive on rewards as they progress.
The government are currently reviewing all phonics schemes and as a result of this, from September, our governors have agreed to buy into the Read, Write, Inc reading scheme. This will cover all phonics phases from phase 1 - phase 6. Our new early reading champion will be Miss Steele and she will be running a series of sessions to update you all on how this will work.
